Your self-guided art walk continues across Grand Avenue from the
California Plaza Water Court where you will see significant sculptures by two
famed women artists.

In the 1980s
when this work, Sequi, by Nancy
Graves was commissioned, there was growing
pressure to include works of art by women in public
places. |

Louise
Nevelson's monumental "Night Sail" earned such
accolades
when it was installed that the Los Angeles City Council
declared an official "Louise Nevelson Day".
It is located next to the Wells Fargo bank building. |
 |
The walking tour
continues Inside the Wells Fargo building, next to the
Nevelson work. Spanish artist
Joan Miro had passed away before this sculpture,
"La Caresse
d'un Oiseau", was commissioned from his estate by
Wells Fargo Bank. It is based on one of his paintings. In the
adjacent Fountain Cafe are several Robert
Graham female figure sculptures mounted on pedestals
throughout the restaurant. Walk
down to the lower level to see Jean Dubuffet's
"Le
Dandy", also commissioned after his death and based on
one of his best known painted images. |
 |
Then go out
the door and across Hope Street where an Alexander
Calder sculpture, painted in the hallmark Calder
Red, dominates the plaza in front of Bank of America.
The tour starts
here.
