Arcadia is a small city with
seemingly something for everyone. It is the home of the Los
Angeles Arboretum. And the Santa Anita Racetrack. And quiet
streets lined with 1960s ranch style homes.
|
|
And brand new mansions
sitting side-by-side with modest post World War II houses. It also
has a good-size shopping mall -- and plans to build a very large new
shopping/ entertainment/ condo development, similar to L.A.'s The Grove
and Glendale's Americana. |
The city's population,
according to the 2000 census, is 53,000 people. The median
household income is $56,000. And 44% of the adults have a college
education.
 |
Arcadia
extends both north and south of the 210 freeway about 10 minutes
east of Pasadena. To the north of the freeway are
neighborhoods of very well-kept ranch homes. |
 |
Toward
the south end of the city, new mansions are being built in a
neighborhood of modest older homes. |
 |
Along
the broad boulevard of Huntington Drive and in adjacent
neighborhoods are new and older condos, town houses and rental
apartments. |
 |
Lucky
Baldwin was one of the first American owners of the land that is
now Arcadia. He struck it rich at the Comstock Mine and
moved to Southern California. The Santa Anita racetrack
stems from Baldwin's passion for horse racing. |
Lucky Baldwin's
home is still standing in the Los Angeles Arboretum in Arcadia.
